COHOST.org

I was responsible for creating the brand identity, layout, UI, UX, graphic design, and product design for every part of cohost.org, an independent, worker owned, user supported social media blogging site. I also created Eggbug, cohost’s mascot, and designed all of our merchandise as well. Though this project has concluded, the site has been archived by the team at Archive.org. Please note some elements and features may not be accurately displayed in their rendering engine.

For privacy reasons, most user generated content in the below screenshots has been replaced by placeholder content.

FEATURE DEVELOPMENT

One point of user feedback we received is that in addition to a chronologically-ordered post feed, our users wanted an alternative view option that would allow them to see each of their follow’s most recent posts. I developed a unique inbox-style feed option that would order itself based on which user posted most recently, rather than putting all posts in pure chronological order. This allowed users to see updates from specific posters, and brought more visibility to users who posted less frequently. We allowed users to set this as their default feed option, and learned that many users kept this setting on permanently.

I also developed a user advertising page called “Artist Alley” that allowed users to purchase and display custom ads to other users, organized in a classifieds-style page that was sortable and filterable by tag and content. Unlike most social media websites, our users were begging us for ways to view and interact with ads, and we delivered, selling over $10,000 worth of on-site advertisements in the first week alone.
